Hammondsport, New York sits at the head of Keuka Lake, one of the Finger Lakes that ornament the Empire State's southern tier.
It's a gem of a 19th century village packed with big Victorian houses, including some attractive bed and breakfast inns. The heart of town is a pocket-handkerchief-sized square full of trees and a gazebo for summer concerts. |

| Lake Country Patchwork is within a block of the square, in the downstairs of the historic Opera House, a venerable brick building (1901) that no longer hosts concerts on the upstairs level, but still has storefronts on the street. | |||||||||||||
| The store windows entice you with an array of the goodies to be found insidenot just beautiful hand-made quilts, but books, fabric, and other fun things quilters will love. Inside, proprietor Candace Hosier has a wonderful array of that includes tools, kits, notions and thread, quilt-backing size fabric, embellishing fibers and beads, and other items like cards and gifts. The store opened ten years ago, and has since expanded to the next-door space, affording a workroom for classes that accommodate up to 15 quilters. The interior retains the old-fashioned graces you’d expect in a ‘dry-goods’ store from an earlier era. An elaborate pressed-tin ceiling, wooden floors and counter at the back corner, natural light filtering in from windows in the front and side of the building add up to make you feel you are in a space just made for creating heirlooms. |

The store is a favorite of tourists as well as the locals. Check out every cosy corner of the shop and be sure to look up. The walls are covered with good things. You will be amazed at the quantity and quality of everything from fabrics and notions to patterns, books and kits. Samples are displayed throughout the shop. Candace (Candy) Hosier’s taste and her selection of fabrics are the special pleasure of this store. She has about 1,500 to 2,000 bolts of high-quality cottons and flannels. “I keep more stock in the summer, when we have many tourists visiting,” she says. Along with a good array of basics and batiks, she takes care to stock fabrics that can serve as a memento of the local area’s attractions. In fact, Hosier could almost serve as a ‘tour guide’ for you, if you have never visited the Finger Lakes before.
